I’m really anal when it comes to subtitles. A couple of milliseconds too early and I worry I’m already getting spoiled by the text on screen. A bit too slow and I feel I’m wasting precious brainpower trying to read stale news. When it comes to subtitles, I want the timing to be just right. How do I know when the timing’s just right, though? Well, if it’s a horror movie and a charismatic lead unexpectedly gets horribly mutilated on screen, I want to be shocked by both the text and the visuals. I want the lines of text to appear right at the very moment when the exact dialogue it is referring to is being spoken and not one second earlier or later.
